Character History: Sam Wilson was born to Paul Wilson, a minister, and Darlene Wilson, a devoted housewife, in New York City. He had a happy and fairly normal childhood, despite the rough and declining neighborhood that he grew up in. His parents tried to instill the idea of good works and service in him early, keeping him off the streets by getting him busy with volunteer work and church activities. When Sam was nine his father was killed trying to break up a neighborhood fight. Angry and overcome with grief, Sam turned his back on the church that his father had believed so strongly in. The next few years were difficult as he rebelled against his upbringing, getting into fights and testing the limits with his mother, Darlene. When Sam was sixteen Darlene was shot and killed by a mugger one block away from their apartment. Losing a second parent was devastating and Sam found himself full of regrets about the way he had treated his mother in the time he'd had left with her. Sam finished out high school living with his grandmother and enrolled in the army when he was of age, wanting to get out of his neighborhood as quickly as possible.
Sam excelled at army life, giving himself over completely to the orders and instructions that he was given. For the first couple of years it was a relief to not have to think for himself and with nothing to lose he quickly set himself apart as one of the more daring soldiers. He formed strong relationships with his brother in arms and it was through these connections that he slowly found himself again and regained his sense of humor and naturally outgoing personality. It was in the Army that he met his best friend and wingman, Riley. They were selected to be part of the 58th Paratrooper Rescue Squadron, specifically as test pilots for the EXO-7 Falcon, a set of mechanical wings developed by Stark Industries and tested by the US Army. Their primary objectives as part of the 58th was combat assistance, transport, and medevac. For the next seven years, they flew search and rescue missions in parts of the Middle East, Africa, Southwest Asia and Southern Europe, specifically the El Uotia gunnery range in Libya.
Riley was shot down by an rpg in front of Sam's eyes during a standard night pararescue operation. Sam took his friend's death extremely hard, finding it difficult to find a reason to stay in the service afterwards. He retired and settled down in Washington, DC where he got some much needed counseling and help with his own PTSD and unresolved grief over his parents' deaths. It was a long and bumpy road, but he came out on the other side of it a stronger, wiser person with a desire to begin calling his own orders. Afterwards, he began helping other veterans like himself that were struggling with PTSD and settling back into the world back home. He later became a PTSD group leader at the D.C. Veteran's Administration.
Sam first met Steve Rogers during a morning run, when Steve outran him not once but thirteen times. It doesn't take much for him to realize who this extraordinarily fast soldier is and he doesn't miss the opportunity in striking up a conversation with Rogers and dropping the fact that he works at the VA. Later, he's surprised when Steve actually shows up and they talk briefly about Sam's own loss of a wingman, Riley, and Steve's plans for the future. Two days later Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff show up on Sam's doorstep, asking for help when everyone they know is trying to kill them. Sam lets them in willingly, offering them shelter and food. As they discuss the next steps in trying to determine what to do about Zola's algorithm Sam volunteers to help, giving Steve information about the EXO-7 Falcon and his ability to use it. Steve tells him he got out for a good reason - Riley's death - but Sam is willing to jump back into action in order to help Steve, who he sees as a true hero and believes in completely.
Sam, Steve and Natasha retrieve the EXO-7 Falcon from Ft. Meade where it's stored behind three guarded gates and a 12-inch steel wall. Sam then acts as the front man for kidnapping Agent Sitwell for Steve and Natasha to question. When Sitwell fails to provide any answers, Natasha kicks him off a building and Sam uses the Falcon wings to catch him before he falls to his death. Sitwell is then more willing to cooperate and gives them the final information about Zola's algorithm. En route to the SHIELD headquarters the car that the four of them are in is attacked by the Winter Soldier. Sam takes part in the firefight, drawing fire from Steve and Natasha and taking out some HYDRA soldiers on the bridge. Ultimately, however, they are overtaken by Rumlow's team and while being transported to their executions they are saved by Maria Hill in disguise.
Maria takes them to a secret location where Fury is recovering from his run in with the Winter Soldier. Sam finds himself in the middle of the plan to assault project Insight by taking out the helicarriers carrying the weapons controlled by Zola's algorithm. He firmly backs Steve when he goes head to head with Fury about taking out SHIELD with Insight. Later he tries to talk to Steve about Bucky, indicating that he might not be able to be saved, but Steve dismisses him. Sam, Steve, Natasha and Maria infiltrate SHIELD headquarters and announces HYDRA's plans to all SHIELD agents, encouraging them to fight with them. Sam and Steve quickly move to put their plan in action. Sam quickly finds himself under fire and successfully outmaneuvers several rpgs with his EXO-7 Falcon wings. Sam manages to successfully replace the second helicarrier's chip with the one that will allow Maria to control it. He then gets pulled into a fight with the Winter Soldier while trying to give Steve a drop to the third helicarrier. The Winter Soldier destroys his wings, grounding him and leaving Steve to complete the mission alone.
Later Maria informs him that Rumlow is headed towards the council and Natasha and Sam moves to intercept him. They fight hand to hand until one of the helicarriers crash into the building, crushing Rumlow in its wake. Sam barely makes it out of the building, jumping through a window and falling two stories before landing in a helicopter flown by Fury.
In the aftermath, Sam stationed himself beside a recovering Steve Rogers' bedside until he was discharged from the hospital. At the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier he turns down an offer to work with Nick Fury, opting instead to accompany Steve Rogers on his search for Bucky Barnes.
In the Avengers: Age of Ultron, Sam has been chasing cold leads on Bucky while Steve has been working with the Avengers to take down HYDRA and find Loki's scepter. While he clearly enjoys being invited to the "party" he has no real want to be a part of the Avenger's "crazy" world. It's clear that his outlook has changed after the final battle with Ultron, however, as he is revealed to be one of the new Avengers at the end of the movie. It is most likely that he once again got back into the fight at the request of Steve Rogers, accepting an invitation to fight on his team.
In Ant Man, Sam meets Scott Lang in the Ant Man costume when he goes to investigate a disturbance on the new Avenger's facility roof. Scott isn't exactly forthright with his intentions and they engage in combat with Scott alternating between full size and ant size. Eventually, Scott manages to get into Sam's new Falcon pack and disables the wiring, causing it to malfunction. Scott gets away and Sam tells an offscreen teammate not to tell Cap about this defeat.
Later it's Sam who manages to get word to Scott that he's looking for him, by putting the word out through questionable contacts. At the end credits of the movie, it's revealed that Sam and Steve have found Bucky Barnes, though his arm is in a steel vice of some sort and he is asking for help. Steve and Sam discuss how to help him with limited options. Sam says he has someone in mind.
Abilities/Special Powers: Expert hand to hand combat, expert aviator, proficient with fire arms and knives, skilled marksman.
Third-Person Sample: He had known that things were going to get crazy when he joined up with the Avengers – how could they not? – but this was a whole new level of weird. He’d settled down for a night of sleep on a dirty factory floor after he’d been unable to talk Steve into getting some first, only to wake up in the middle of some impressive looking gardening.
Gone was the dirty floor, the smell of rust and the sight of the Winter Soldier seemingly short circuiting between a killing machine and a ghost of the man that Steve used to know. It had been hard to watch, but even harder to watch Steve as he tried to work out what to do. Sam knew where Steve’s head was and he didn’t know that it was in the most rational place at the moment. It was part of the reason why he wasn’t about to leave him alone with Barnes. The other part was the simple fact that if Steve was going to be there for Bucky, someone needed to be there for Steve and that was Sam’s self-appointed job, almost from the moment they’d met.
It was the reason why he’d risked prison time to put on his wings again. It was the reason why he’d stepped back into newly repaired wings by Stark to fight alongside of the Avengers. It wasn’t just for Steve, he had his own reasons for fighting, but there was something about the way Steve held himself and guarded himself that he recognized. If anybody needed help, it was the man out of time, and Sam had determined that he was as good as anyone to help him.
Except of course he couldn’t help him if he was here, in gardens green enough and tended enough to make the Queen of England jealous. Sam jumped up from the hedge he’d woken up on and began looking around for any explanation of how he’d gotten there, a deep feeling of apprehension settling in his stomach.
This was not good.
First-Person Sample: [The camera turns on and Sam raises his eyebrows in surprise, a small breath of air coming out in a quiet, huh. His expression is neutral, but anyone who knows him well can see anger in the pinched look around his eyes and the tightness in his shoulders.]
So, yeah, I need to talk to someone in charge. Not that I’m not appreciative of the view, but I was sort of in the middle of something important.
[ Really important. He presses his lips together, his expression darkening.]
Answers would be good. Like what is this place? Where are my wings? And most importantly, where are my friends?
Re-app Samples 12.10.15
Wonderland was a funny place. As much as he had vowed not to let it get to him, it had managed to get under his skin in the two months that he had gotten there. He had formed attachments to people that he knew he would miss if he got sent back to his own world. He had come to know the mansion and the grounds like the back of his hand and yet there was always something new to discover or figure out.
More than that, it seemed like there were plenty of people who needed help here in Wonderland. Not that he was arrogant enough to think that he was the help they needed, but all you had to do was talk to people to know that they all had one or two things in common. People had it tough all over. The grass really wasn't much greener, no matter what universe people came from.
He had wondered how people had seemed so content to stay here when he'd first arrived. Only one person had talked about escape like it was a real option, everyone else had seemed fine with carrying on with life as normally as they could under the circumstances. Now he found himself falling into the second category. Not that he wouldn't fight if the opportunity presented itself, but there were far too many unknown variables. That and he would never be able to take that ride home if it meant not being able to make sure that the people he'd come to care about wouldn't get the same.
In the meantime, he set a schedule and he stuck to it. He talked to people as he got the chance. He helped out where he could. And he prepared to be able to help when the Wonderland brand of shit hit the fan. In other words, it was life as usual, except with a little bit of magic thrown in.
[ Sam is grinning from ear to ear as he flips on the camera.]
Guess what angel just got his wings? [ He lifts the camera in order to show off his new Falcon wings. They're not as nice as the ones he had back home, but Stark did the best he could.]
Of course they might need a little testing. Beatrice, you got my back right? Of course you do.
You guys see something impossibly handsome soaring through the sky, it's just me, Falcon.
